THE JOURNEY

By Professor Ann Auman

Administrator, Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism

I launched this website in 2016 during my professional and personal journey to find connections between values in Hawaiʻi and those of our globalized media. The site seeks to highlight the importance of remembering cultural ties when practicing media ethics. I hope it will also serve as a resource and thoughtful discussion center in this growing field, particularly in the context of the Pacific and Pacific Rim nations and cultures.

In this space we can theorize, celebrate the freedom to debate media ethics issues, and share best practices within a variety of cultural contexts. Join the conversation or post an ethical question. Or post an interesting media ethics case to share with others too.

The site also showcases the Carol Burnett Fund for Responsible Journalism at the School of Communications at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa in supporting journalism ethics. The year 2016 is the 35th anniversary of the establishment of the fund. Scholarships and awards are given to Hawaiʻi students for their tireless efforts in upholding high ethical standards in journalism as well as nationally to graduate students who add significantly to scholarly discussions about issues in journalism ethics.

The site also has an archive of previous Carol Burnett lectures held at the University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa.
